  1. If you care about this book and have thoughts of seeing the movie, you'll want to read this blog post by Ned Vizzini himself on the surreal experience of seeing your life turned into a film. Ned has always struck me as a thoughtful and sensitive person. His current post leaves me with the same feeling.

  2. I am home this weekend, and I went to a movie with my mom and my sister last night. I saw this trailer, and at the end, I saw "It's Kind of a Funny Story". I recognized that we briefly talked about this book in class. My mom and sister thought it looks good, but also sad because the boy has depression. I told them we had talked brifely about the book in my YA literature class. It was fun sharing information with them about one of my classes.

For those of you who have read the book, does it look like the movie follows the book for the most part?

  3. For the most part the movie looks accurate. It looks brighter than I imagined the book to be, but I also found the book hilarious and really enjoyable. I read Ned Vizzini's blog post and it really seems like he approves of the screen adaptation. I'm going to see it this weekend though and will let you know then. = ]

  4. This film looks great. Though I think that films have a hard time portraying novels, it can be the films that get people hooked on a novel or an introduction into the unknown world of a new genre. Film has gotten me excited to read The Chronicles of Narnia, Twilight, Secret Window, Secret Garden by Stephen King, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and so many more books.

One question that I have is, if there is a film made based on a good novel does it open up debate to discuss the important features of that novel that many not have been emphasized in the film?

  5. I just watched this after reading Ned's post. I laughed out loud. I fully support any story that brings humor to sucky things like depression.

I think Rachel brings up a good point. I will admit, I usually enjoy seeing movies that have been made out of books I have read. I am not sure if it is the joy of watching what others have done to this book I have accomplished or some other factor having more to do with entertainment. I will say however, there have been many books that either change the story of the novel or leave out pivotal scenes. Does the author have any say in situations like these? or are they, like Ned, simply happy to be having their book made into a film?
