Having read two books this week (one for my book talk and one for our assigned reading), I realized how much I love historical fiction. I had read Cameron Dokey’s Hindenburg 1937 when I was in junior high and loved it then but I think I have a greater appreciation now of the story being told than what I grasped and remembered then. I was able to appreciate having had a larger background in my history education than I would have when I first read it. The life experiences which shaped me into the reader I am also gave me a foundation to relate and/or empathize with the characters of this story while taking into account the historical events for which they are present.

I totally agree! Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres because it is something that is so close to the truth that is makes you feel like it could be real! Also, you can find historical fiction on almost any topic, one of my favorites is called The Linguist and the Emperor, which is about a man who travels with Napoleon when they discover the Rosetta Stone! If any one is interested I brought the copy with me! :)

Hey Kaylin,
ReplyDeleteYou blog post reminded me of our discussion on wheather a reader has to be able to connect with a book. I think what your saying provides more evidence that yes, a more connected reader will get more out of a book. I had a similar experience with Countdown. I think that this was the hardest book for me to connect with/ understand so far and I believe because of that I was able to get less from the book. However, I think you brought up another important point, rereading is worth it. you may never understand the power of rereading unless you try if after a long expanse of time because that is when the difference in interpretation becomes more visible.

You got me really thinking about re-reading. How often when we re-read a text does it mean something completely different for us the second or third time around. I never used to be a big re-reader, but many of the books for this class are ones I read once before at least 6 months ago and I'm starting to realize how re-reading is anything but "re-"reading. It's like picking up a new book.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your book talk, by the way. I never knew about the Hindenburg, so, it was really interesting!
Did you ever read the American Girl books? I always loved reading those. They had a lot of different series and I always loved the history that was involved.
