  1. I think it is so weird how bombing information was incorporated into so many things during this time. Obviously they would need to warn the children, but the fact that it was such a worry, they were making cartoons about it really surprises me! I can't imagine living during this, I would be scared out of my mind!

  2. haha, i was going to post these same video's but you beat me to it. I remember my AP US history teacher showing us these in high school and me trying to decide if these video's would have made me feel safer or more afraid. I now think more afraid

  3. Dear Chloe,

If you still want to make a post there is a author produced trailer for countdown out there.

  4. Seeing links to this kind of material--and to the connections Nikki and Jenny saw with Boy Meets World--makes me really glad we have a blog. Just when I'm ready to abandon the idea of a blog for future classes, feeling weighted down with too much work myself, I'm reminded of how useful it is to have a place to "put" stuff, to have something else to connect to before, during, or after reading and class discussion.

  5. Wow! That is such and interesting video. My reaction is that it is funny, but then when I think about how scared the people of the time were, I remember how serious this is. I really want to show this to my parents and grandparents and see if they remember this.

  6. Jason,
I am really glad you posted this. As I read Countdown, I wondered what kind of the video Franny saw because she talked about it a lot. I think it is so cool that youtube had the exact video. I think it is great they had a video to warn and prepare students and make it seem more for children by adding a turtle. However, some of the information they shared would have scared me as a child-not knowing when a bomb may go off, possibly getting hurt, etc. I do not think they should have added that information.
    Thanks for sharing!

  7. It's amazing to realize how much the cold war was incorporated into their lives through commercials, social practices, and family patterns. It also makes me wonder if in 50 years, kids are going to look back at us and notice a Duck and Cover video of ours and talk about the same things.
